Generation Africa 2.0 Presentation

Generation Africa 2.0 Presentation

default

The Generation Africa 2.0 project is an initiative of the South Africa media company STEPS aiming to produce up to 30 films (short, medium and long) from 21 countries in Africa amplifying the African voice and action in the ongoing climate crisis. These films will be distributed on multiple platforms including broadcasters, streamers, and used in impact campaigns for screening in communities, educational institutions and organisations across Africa to stimulate dialogue and discussion about the climate crisis.

Four of the filmmakers from Cabo Verde, the Gambia, Kenya and Senegal will present their films at this event. Don Edkins from STEPS will provide an overview of the project and the goals and strategy for audience reach and impact.

Babucarr Manka (The Gambia)

Project: Standing Up”

One hour film

“Standing Up” is a compelling observational documentary about a single-parent disabled woman who is seeking financial independence through recycling plastic bags and the exploitative inner workings of an NGO that promises to lead her through that journey.

Fagamou Ndiaye (Senegal)

Project: “Floods in Sotrac Keur Massar”

Medium length film

Can flooding really be beaten by large-scale drainage projects or by tinkering with pumps and pipes salvaged by the community? “Floods in Sotrac Keur Massar” follows residents in their relentless efforts to combat recurrent flooding and protect their homes in the face of an unforgiving environment.

Karanja Ng’endo (Kenya)

Project: “Forgotten Land”

Feature length film

In the aftermath of a devastating drought, a young Maasai student and their family must rebuild their lives while navigating the challenges of education and preserving their traditional way of life.

Samira Vera-Cruz (Cabo Verde)

Project: “Plastic Atlantis”

Feature length film

A poetic parallel between the slave trade period and modern-day capitalism that generate vast amounts of plastic waste in a shared space: the Atlantic currents between Senegal, Cabo Verde and Brazil. A dialogue that looks for traces of a Creole identity born from pain, mourning and generational violence.
