Sabine Herpich observes Berlin-based musician Barbara Morgenstern at work on her new album “In Anderem Licht”. Lyrics and harmonies are written in Morgenstern's study, arrangements are fine-tuned during rehearsals with the band, and then the 11 tracks are recorded in the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin. The work also includes designing the album cover, producing press photos and a music video and planning the tour. We are also present when Barbara Morgenstern plays the new songs on stage in front of her fans for the first time. The film observes the work steps closely and shows that the work on the music succeeds because the individual voices listen to each other. And that music is also a place of retreat, friendship and solace.
Like Barbara Morgenstern, Sabine Herpich works largely alone and autonomously. In her films, she observes artists at work: in David, this is the sculptor and shoemaker David Laugomer; A Picture by Aleksander Gudalo follows the creation of a painting from start to finish. Art Comes from the Beak the Way It Has Grown portrays an art workshop for people with disabilities. Herpich's main interest here is the artistic process, the creation of a work from the artist's daily confrontation with the material.
