About

Initiated by Jane Mote in November 2023, #DocSafe is a collaborative initiative that aims to raise questions, research answers, raise awareness, advocate and ultimately create recommendations and best practices for the documentary industry about ways to make our shared space(s) safer for all. #DocSafe aims to reduce and eliminate harm, whether they are related to all forms of harassment, oppression and discrimination, abuse of power, ethical concerns, curatorial practices or the various facets of safety.

The roundtables in DOK Leipzig will build on discussions from the Safer Spaces roundtable session at Durban FilmMart in July. Organized and curated by Marion Schmidt and Themba Bhebhe, the Durban event centered around the themes of Cultural Safety, Political Safety, Accountability and Restorative Justice, Sexual Harassment and Abuse of Power and Power Dynamics. In Leipzig the curators plan to present the outcomes to another set of  participants to discuss the issues further and to unpack them  from a  variety of different perspectives in an attempt to advance the  development of a community of practice.
